How I Fared: Growing through March
I did see the humor in it – picking “expansiveness” as my Essence for March. I did find it cosmically charming – the idea of focusing on inner growth while my outer world was shrinking.
Each month of 2019, I have chosen an “Essence of the Month.”
A month ago, when I couldn’t stop my eyes from falling on expansiveness amongst the list of Essences, I gave in and set to the online dictionary to tell me that it meant having a wide range or extent; comprehensive; unrestrained, free, or open.
That is what I promised myself in March. I told myself I would be open to whatever it was the Universe threw my way – the good, the bad, and the ugly.
When I first moved to New York City in January 2016, I didn’t have a clue. I had no job, no apartment, and no idea how to ride the subway.
Getting back to the city in January 2019 after some extensive traveling toward the middle-end of 2018, I found myself in a similar spot. I didn’t have a clue.
I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do or where I wanted to be or who I was becoming. And so I fell back on the unofficial rule I had given myself when I first moved to the Big Apple: Be open to whatever comes your way.
So I said yes. In 2016, saying yes meant I worked at a breastfeeding resource center and volunteered at a charity crawfish boil. In 2019, saying yes meant believing in myself – even if the path ahead wasn’t perfectly clear.
To lean into expansiveness meant to trust in ways I didn’t know I could. It meant to give fair chance to everything that came my way, soaking up the good and politely side-stepping the bad.
After this month, I find myself marching into April with an open heart and a faithful beat and I am all the better for it.
