A friend shared an article from the Huffington Post entitled “50 Eye-Opening Questions to Ask Your Grandchildren.” In reading the piece, I realized it could serve as inspiration for this childless 30-year-old. It would be a good exercise for me… for all of us. So here’s to a new series of questions. I’m going to pick my favorites and share over the coming months. May you also be inspired to reflect deeply on your own answers.
Question: What is something brave that you have done?
I think everything I’ve done that I have done while scared is brave.
Maybe as a child, the brave thing was riding the rollercoaster or jumping from the highest tree branch. Or maybe the brave thing was going up to a classmate on the playground and asking to join in on the game.
There are things that, as an adult, terrify me. And while some of these things might elevate my heart rate, for someone else in my life, they might be as mindless, routine, and uneventful as making the bed in the morning.
Because of that, I’m hesitant to claim an activity as the brave thing I did. I think the brave thing is the thing I did when I was scared.
Being anxious or worried and doing it anyway? That is true bravery. It might not have come with a cape or a John Williams soundtrack. It might look messy or awkward. You may have sweat through your shirt. But did you get to the other side? Did you do it even if your hands were shaking?
That, my friend, is the brave thing you have done. And that is the thing you should be ridiculously proud of.
