Things That Make Sense

I like things that make sense. And while this might make it seem like I’m super logical and practical, I am absolutely not. I like things that make sense to me which often means it’s the least logical or practical thing to anyone around me.

But I like things that make sense to my brain. I like the multitask of calling a friend while walking to the grocery store or the foresight of always keeping an extra tube of toothpaste under the bathroom sink.

Things that make sense aren’t always glamorous. Sometimes it’s the smart choice, the “looks good on paper” choice, the “who could argue with this?” choice.

It helps that many things I love conveniently make sense to me. Which is to say I can justify them. Dedicating lots of time to distance running is good for my physical and mental health. That makes sense. Working in the nonprofit industry taps into my desire to live a mission-focused life and make a difference. That makes sense. Getting really good at baking is perfect for someone who loves little sweet treats and sharing with friends. It all just makes sense.

At some point last year, I was thinking about something that’s a big part of my life that doesn’t always make sense, which is to say that it sometimes makes my life extra complicated. I get silly stressed about it. It’s not logical for lots of reasons. And yet it remains a huge part of my life simply because I love it.

It’s a values-based decision. It’s a joy-based decision. It’s a deeply meaningful decision. It’s a conviction so strong that somehow it’s overwritten every piece of logic in me. That I love it so much that it doesn’t make sense not to do.

It’s a decision that doesn’t make sense on paper but makes sense for who I am on a deep soul level. And I believe that counts for more than something.

So to my logicians and list writers, sometimes you need to stop weighing pros and cons. Sometimes, you need to trust that the most rewarding things in life may be beautiful impracticalities.
