The Smile Project continues to connect me with changemakers around the world who are making a positive impact in their community and I will forever be grateful for that. In this edition of #ServiceSpotlight, I’m thrilled to introduce Edie Young, the Founder and Executive Director of We Are Artistic, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C. I can’t wait to share their story.
Liz: Let’s start in traditional Smile Project fashion. Fill in the blank: Happiness is..
Edie: In my opinion, Happiness is feeling generally happy and not faking a smile.
Liz: Tell me about We Are Artistic.
Edie: It’s a group that supports artists, artistic people, and people who appreciate art! We support artists through social media by uplifting their posts and by doing collabs (where we all draw something under the same prompt). We also do virtual events and in-person events, such as card-making events where we make cards for kids in hospitals. We have a table set up, and all walks of life can come by and make a card with the supplies! We also have done events where we work to end the R-word, such as where we got people to put hearts on our “harmony oak tree,” which is a tree on a trifold. We have all ages come to volunteer; it makes me super happy to see others want to continue helping me with this organization.
I founded it in 2019 after seeing how hard it was for artists to get support. I also wanted to create a space where everyone can help and where all abilities can get involved. I noticed people with IDDs (Intellectual and/or Development Disorders) are often left out or made fun of. I believe everyone has talents and skills they can bring to the table (but some just may need more help). We have many students that come to get community service hours with us!
Liz: What is the driving force behind what you do?
Edie: The driving force is getting to see the impact that is created and how happy people are when they learn about us! Also knowing I’m helping others.
Liz: What does service mean to you?
Edie: Service means to me giving back to others.
Liz: How can people get involved?
Edie: People can learn more on our website or make a donation here. I also invite them to follow our social media accounts.
Liz: Anything else you'd like to add?
Edie: I would like to thank all my amazing volunteers, directors, and event participants and anyone who has donated before.
Liz: Do you have a favorite piece of advice to leave us with?
Edie: Don’t take criticism from anyone you wouldn’t go to for advice.
