Service Spotlight: Aashray Charities

In today’s Service Spotlight, I am thrilled to share the story of Samarth Mehta. Samarth is the president of a New Jersey based organization focused on supporting families at Bristol Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital.

Liz: Let’s start in traditional Smile Project fashion. Give me a “Happiness is.”

Samarth: I’ll answer with one of my favorite quotes: “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Liz: Tell me about Aashray Charities

Samarth: Aashray, shelter in Hindi, keeps families united and near their hospitalized children through local hotels so that families can better care for their children without sacrificing their personal well-being.

We also understand that fighting childhood illness can be financially and emotionally expensive for a family, especially for those away from home. To alleviate some of these costs, we hope that by providing a private space filled with necessary facilities, like an in-room kitchen, families won’t have to worry about insignificant things like finding their next meal, doing their laundry, or where they can take a hot, private shower. And with access to amenities like a pool and exercise room, families can reboot and recharge, ready to take on the next day.

Liz: What is the driving force behind what you do?

Samarth: My family. During my kidney transplant, my mother lived with me in my hospital room for five days, sacrificing her sleep, welfare, and, at times, nutrition. My father drove hours to and from the hospital each day, attempting to juggle work, my sister’s wellbeing, and his own welfare, although often forfeiting all three. Thus, while I couldn’t help them then, I made it my mission to help others in similar positions.

Liz: What does service mean to you?

Samarth: If I can help even one family breathe easier and not have to face the same difficulties my family faced, my life will have direction and purpose. And I wholeheartedly believe that a life dedicated to service is filled with joy.

Liz: How can people get involved?

Samarth: You can get involved by donating, raising awareness, or lending a hand. If you want to start a fundraiser or are looking for volunteer opportunities contact info@aashraycharities.com. You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram (@aashraycharities) and visit Aashraycharities.org to learn more. Donations can be made here.

Liz: Do you have a piece of advice or quote to leave us with?

Samarth: This quote is posted on my wall: “We cannot solve our problems with the same

thinking we used when we created them.” – Albert Einstein
