We are so proud of the folks that make up the ambassador program. Today, we are thrilled to feature Marilynn Laureano, a high school junior based in California who started recording “Happiness is” on October 22nd, 2023. This is her story.

Liz: Let's start in traditional Smile Project fashion. Give us a favorite "Happiness is.”

Marilynn: Happiness is helping other people, whether they're family, a friend or even a stranger.

Liz: What made you start writing daily Happiness is?

Marilynn: I got involved with The Smile Project after a very close friend of mine passed away and I decided that I wanted to cherish all the happy moments (even the smallest ones) I had with my family and friends. I wanted to be a person that brought happiness and a sense of comfort and security to the people around them.

Liz: How has recording daily joy impacted your life?

Marilynn: Recording my daily joy has helped me in my journey of grief and it has provided me a journal/diary of my accomplishments and moments of joy.

Liz: Do you have a favorite quote or piece of advice that keeps you grounded or inspired?

Marilynn: One of my favorite pieces of advice actually came from the Smile Project blog, titled "Navigable News," when I first read it, it felt like a breath of fresh air. I had never thought of thinking in that matter, "Maybe it's good. Maybe it's neutral. But is it navigable?" One thing I've learned is that it truly is always navigable, in my case, grief was navigable and something that only made me stronger.
