We are so proud of the folks that make up the ambassador program. Today, we are thrilled to feature Erikka Chowdhury, who started recording “Happiness is” on October 3rd, 2020. This is her story.

Liz: Let's start in traditional Smile Project fashion. Give us a favorite "Happiness is.”

Erikka: One of my favorite “Happiness is” is Day 109: “Happiness is… thinking about the valuable words of wisdom I have heard from the ones who inspire me!” It truly does bring a smile to my face. I would love to inspire the world and the people around me as well!

Liz: Tell us a little about yourself.

Erikka: I’m currently a Master’s student studying Cell and Molecular Biology with a focus on Breast Cancer Research. Apart from being a student, I’m also a freelance writer for Odyssey and Unwritten. Writing is a part of my identity and has always served as a therapeutic for me throughout my life. In addition, I enjoy traveling, reading books, learning new things, and spending quality time with friends and family!

Liz: What made you start writing daily Happiness is?

Erikka: I found out about The Smile Project via an Odyssey article written by Grace Connors, another member of The Smile Project. While reading her article, I further realized the value of spreading joy and finding ways to spark happiness in our world. I’m extremely honored and proud to be a part of this incredible organization and hope to continue spreading happiness since it is both an art and a science!

Liz: How has recording daily joy impacted your life?

Erikka: I have learned to appreciate the little joys of life that we sometimes take for granted a bit more by recording daily joy. Simply taking a moment to cherish the valuable possessions we have amid trials and tribulations is a great asset. Personally, I have observed growth and resilience in myself by recording daily joy. For instance, there are times when I start getting super hyper when things don’t go as planned. But now, I feel more empowered to conquer all obstacles that come my way by taking the time to focus on the brighter things in life.

Liz: Do you have a favorite quote or piece of advice that keeps you grounded or inspired?

Erikka: Yes, I do. One of my favorite quotes that constantly inspires me is: “Happiness is like a butterfly, the more you chase it, the more it will evade you, but if you notice the other things around you, it will gently come and sit on your shoulder” by Henry David Thoreau. I find Thoreau’s way of defining happiness exotic and rejuvenating to the soul and mind! I also interpret happiness as those special dreams that have always driven me towards adventure and success. Sometimes, all we have to do is strive for happiness and it will come to us naturally no matter how long the journey is.

Liz: What didn't we ask you that you'd like to share with us?

Erikka: First and foremost, I would like to say thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful initiative. It is a privilege to be considered a “Smile Ambassador” and promote countless reasons to find happiness! This has become a beautiful way of life for me and I would love to encourage many more to do the same!
