Exploding Popcorn

Every time I make a conscious decision to put a bag of popcorn in the microwave I am caught off guard by the first POP. Every time, I run back to the kitchen because that first exploding kernel makes me think something is wrong and so I rush back and I get to the microwave and I smell the (artificial) butter and suddenly I remember that I’m making popcorn. That I wanted popcorn. That the corn must pop to make popcorn.
The last time I did this, I couldn’t help but laugh at how silly and ridiculous and dumb it is to fall for it like clockwork.
And then my second thought was gratitude that my instinct is to react to exploding kernels in my kitchen.
