Catch Yourself Doing Something Right

“Nice save,” I say out loud and to nobody as I stop the fork from tumbling off my breakfast plate, a problem that I, admittedly, caused by moving too fast.
I laugh at the way my words sit in the solitary air for nobody and smile at the unintentional positive self talk I’ve let linger. I find it a bit awkward, this self congratulation.
But then I think of how often I’d mumble the reverse. Should the fork have fallen and taken my fruit with it, would it have felt more natural to groan “idiot!”
And if so, why is that the case? Isn’t it nicer to vocalize the good things?
Isn’t it more exciting to catch ourselves doing something right?
