I’ve long been involved with a nonprofit called The Pollination Project that every day gifts a $1,000 seed grant to a group or individual who is making the world a better place.
That’s how I got connected with Ms. Nalumansi Phionah, founder of the Kiyita Foundation in Namayina, Uganda. This is her story.
Liz: Let’s start in traditional Smile Project fashion. Give me a “Happiness is.”
Nalumansi: Happiness is joy from your heart.
Liz: Tell me about the Kiyita Foundation.
Nalumansi: In 2017, I started Kiyita Foundation to empower women in entrepreneurship, mentorship, gender equality advocacy, and leadership training. I also work with local poor children training them tree planting, health benefits of trees, climate change effects, currently am looking for funds to open up kids library and kids vegetable garden.
Liz: What is the driving force behind what you do?
Nalumansi: When I was growing up In my village, women were not allowed to have education, take leadership positions, or speak in community meetings. When I finished secondary school, I started a community based organization but I was forced to close it because I couldn’t balance school and organization.
Liz: What does service mean to you?
Nalumansi: Service to me means being able to deliver what is needed to people who need it.
