Everybody Wants to Rule the World: Song Analysis

Tears for Fears is an English band that became popular in the 1980s with one of their big songs being “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” [below]

I’m a big fan of the opening lyrics to this one:

“Welcome to your life/There's no turning back”

Though I had heard this song many times and found myself frequently “grooving” along to the catchy beat, it wasn’t until the first two lines were pulled out that I began to think harder.

Forgetting about the rest of the song or words, I fell in love with that idea.

“Welcome to your life/There’s no turning back.”

It reminds me of a quote I have taped above my alarm clock.

“The day will start whether or not you get up.”

I think sometimes we think we can run away from the problem. We try to hide from the day by burrowing ourselves into more blankets and turning our back on the light cracking through the curtains. Not only is that unfair to our friends, family, and people we live with but it is also a ludicrous motion.

I have no say over whether or not Tuesday morning starts. I can stay in bed until 1 p.m. but that clock is still going to hit 1 p.m. eventually. It doesn’t matter how badly I pray for an extra hours sleep or what have you. Time moves on and we have to follow suit.

Life is happening all around us and we have two choices. We can either hide from the adventure or embrace it.

“There’s no turning back.”

I know my choice.
